Sharing Her Elephant Love
When Tenley Propst said that all she wanted for Christmas was an elephant, she had no idea she would get that, and more.
“I went and saw the elephants after they arrived at the zoo, of course, but I didn’t know about the Zoo Mama and Zoo Daddy program,” says the Iowa State sophomore who originally hails from Plattsmouth. She was shocked when her Santa gift was becoming an elephant’s ZooMama, and a plaque in the elephant family herd room with her name on it.
“Her face as she read the letters about the plaque and being a ZooMama had us all in tears of joy,” recalls Tenley’s mother.
Tenley says she has loved elephants since she was a little girl, and had the opportunity see them up close and personally on safari in Africa during her junior year in high school. “I burst into tears the first time I saw one,” she laughs. “They are so human-like, and they are social – they can’t stand to be alone, just like me!”
By the time she got back to school, everyone knew about her ZooBaby and plaque – she’d shared photos on her Instagram, Facebook and Snapchat feeds, and many of her friends wanted animals of their own. “I would highly suggest this as a gift, especially if someone particularly loves a certain animal,” Tenley says. “It’s a cool thing to be a part of, and it makes me feel like I’m contributing to taking care of them.”
There’s still time to purchase an elephant plaque for your Valentine or anyone in your life that wants to help care for our elephants. In fact, any plaques purchased by Feb. 1 will be installed by Feb. 28. For more information, please click here, or call us on 402-738-2073 with any questions.
