Please Join Us for Cocktails and Conservation

We are thrilled to have Dr. Cheryl Morris as our special guest at our next Cocktails and Conservation event on Thursday, March 2 from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. Dr. Morris was recently named Omaha Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium’s chief conservation officer, and is a longtime member of the zoo family.

“This is our third year hosting this type of event,” says Tina Cherica, executive director of the Omaha Zoo Foundation, noting that previous guests have included the zoo’s executive director, Dennis Pate, discussing the master plan; Omaha Zoo Foundation chairman, and former zoo director, Dr. Lee G. Simmons (Doc), recounting the history of the zoo; and Doc’s wife, Marie Simmons, reminiscing about the days when she cared for newborn zoo animals in her home, alongside her own small children.

Cherica notes this is the first time a speaker will specifically focus on the topic of conservation. “We felt the timing of doing this now was important because we’ve achieved a lot of significant conservation milestones lately.”

Some examples include the one millionth tree planted in Madagascar, the zoo’s reproductive work to preserve the worldwide genetic diversity of tigers, and a partnership with the state of Hawaii, spearheaded by director of plant conservation, Marge From, to preserve a plant species there.

The event is open exclusively to donors and patron members, and Cherica hopes that guests will make a point to engage with Dr. Morris and the other scientists and researchers who will be in attendance about the critical conservation work they are doing, both here in Omaha, and around the world.

“It’s not a lecture,” she says. “It’s a chance to ask a scientist everything you’ve ever wanted to ask. When we talk to our donors, they are always excited about our conservation efforts. This event is a unique way for our supporters to directly connect with the scientists carrying out our mission.”
