A New Film Experience
“To be able to be so immersed in what’s showing on the screen is an experience that you can’t get anywhere else in the area,” says Dustin Olson, senior manager of guest services at Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium.
Olson is referring to the newly renovated Lozier Giant Screen Theater which premiered on March 30 with a special screening event for zoo employees of Oceans: Our Blue Planet 3D. “Everyone stayed until the end of the credits. Even our aquarists, who have seen everything there is to be seen about the ocean, were completely enthralled,” he says.
What makes the Giant Screen experience so special is a Christie xenon-illuminated 3-D 4K projection system that delivers the crispest images to be seen onscreen today, without any of the quirks of reel film such as specks of dust that get projected onto the screen. The theater also benefits from a premium QSC 5.1 surround sound audio system, new seats, flooring and lighting.
The upgrades weren’t simply a nice-to-have. Over time fewer and fewer films have been produced that could be screened with the zoo’s old IMAX projector. With the new system, Olson says, the zoo has access to any digital film in existence.
“This also opens us up to being able to use the theater in new ways,” he says. “We can do PowerPoint presentations here with a speaker or students can come and do presentations.”
“We are so grateful to Lozier for their continued support of the theatre. Having donors who are proud to help us continue to provide excellent experiences is what makes us one of the world’s best zoos,” says Kiley Thiele, Omaha Zoo Foundation’s director of development. “We hope everyone gets the chance to see one of the new films soon!”
Oceans: Our Blue Planet 3D, along with Great Apes 3D and Meerkats 2D will be screened daily through
